If your car was swallowed by a flash flood in Kelana Jaya recently, your first instinct was probably to call your insurance company. But here's the hard truth that many Malaysian drivers learn too late: standard motor insurance does NOT cover flood damage — unless you specifically added a Special Perils rider to your policy.
This single blind spot has cost PJ and Klang Valley car owners tens of thousands of ringgit in uninsured repair bills. This article explains exactly what you need to know before your next renewal.
Most Malaysians are on a Comprehensive motor insurance plan and assume they're fully protected. But comprehensive doesn't mean all-risk. A standard comprehensive policy in Malaysia covers:
• Accident damage from collisions
• Third-party bodily injury and property damage
• Fire damage
• Theft of the vehicle
What it does NOT include by default: flood, storm, landslide, or any other natural disaster. These are called Acts of God, and they require a separate add-on called Special Perils coverage.
Important: Even a comprehensive policy leaves you unprotected against floods unless you specifically added the Special Perils rider.
Special Perils (also called Act of God coverage) is a low-cost add-on to your motor insurance policy that extends your protection to include:
• Flash floods and rising water
• Storm and hurricane damage
• Landslides and falling trees
• Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions
For most vehicles, Special Perils costs only 0.3% - 0.5% of your sum insured — that typically works out to RM500 extra per year for a car sum insured RM100,000. Compare that to the average cost of flood damage repairs: RM5,000 to RM50,000 or more, depending on how deep the water got and how long the car was submerged.
Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam, Subang Jaya, Kelana Jaya, and Ara Damansara are among the most flood-prone urban areas in Malaysia. Low-lying roads around SS2, Jalan Templer, and the Damansara-Puchong corridor flood regularly during heavy rain. If you park your car on the ground floor of a low-lying area or in a basement car park, you are at real risk.
In November and December each year — peak monsoon season — workshops across PJ are flooded with water-damaged vehicles. Many of those car owners had no idea their policy didn't cover the damage until they tried to file a claim.
Yes — but you need to do it before a flood happens, not after. You can add Special Perils as an endorsement to your current policy at any time (though you will be required to provide photos of your vehicle), and it takes effect immediately. Contact your insurance agent to add it now..
Third-party insurance only covers damage you cause to other people and their vehicles. It provides zero protection for your own car — flood or otherwise. If your car has significant market value, upgrading to Comprehensive + Special Perils is strongly recommended.
It depends on how deep the water was. Light flooding (water entering cabin but not reaching the engine) may cost RM3,000–RM8,000 in electrical repairs. Full submersion can write off the entire vehicle if water enters the engine. Repair bills of RM20,000–RM50,000 are not uncommon for newer cars.
Yes — any own-damage claim will affect your No Claims Discount (NCD), which is the discount you've built up for claim-free years. If you claim for flood damage, your NCD is reduced to 0% at the next renewal. This is another reason why adding Special Perils coverage proactively (and not needing to claim) is the smart play.
If your car's market value is below RM10,000, you might be on Third-Party, Fire & Theft insurance. Special Perils is only available as an add-on to comprehensive cover. The decision depends on whether the cost of replacing or repairing your car in a flood would be a serious financial blow to you.
Check your current policy — look for 'Special Perils' in your coverage summary. If it's not there, you're not covered for floods.
Call or WhatsApp your insurance agent today to add the rider. It takes minutes.
If you park in a basement or flood-prone area, move your car to higher ground when heavy rain is forecast.
When renewing your insurance next time, never skip Special Perils — it is always worth it in PJ.
