A cracked windscreen is one of the most common small insurance situations Malaysian drivers face — and also one of the most misunderstood. Many people pay for windscreen repairs out-of-pocket because they assume making a claim will reduce their No Claims Discount (NCD).
Here's the truth: if your policy includes windscreen cover, you can claim for windscreen repair or replacement without any impact on your NCD at all, though this benefit is limited to a one-time claim for any of the covered glass sides within the policy year.
In Malaysia, windscreen damage claims fall under a specific add-on endorsement attached to your comprehensive motor insurance policy. This is separate from the main own-damage section of your policy — and that separation is the key.
When you claim under the windscreen endorsement, you are NOT triggering an own-damage claim. Your NCD is only affected by claims made under the own-damage section. A windscreen claim has its own sub-limit and does not touch your NCD.
Windscreen claims in Malaysia do NOT affect your NCD — as long as your policy has a windscreen endorsement and you claim through that rider, not as a general own-damage claim.
• Cracks or chips in the windscreens, windows and sunroof glass (any sides)
• Full windscreen replacement if repair is not possible
• Some policies also cover rear windscreen and side windows — check your policy schedule
• Damage caused by gravel, debris, road accidents, or vandalism
How to Make a Windscreen Claim — Step by Step
Look at your motor insurance policy schedule. You should see a line item for 'Windscreen' with a declared sum (e.g., RM800, RM1,500, RM2,500). This is your windscreen sub-limit. If there's no windscreen line item, you don't have the rider and will need to pay out-of-pocket or claim under own-damage (which WILL affect your NCD).
Most insurers have a panel of approved windscreen workshops. Using a panel workshop means the claim process is simpler — the workshop bills the insurer directly and you pay only any excess amount (if applicable). If you use a non-panel workshop, you'll likely need to pay upfront and claim reimbursement.
No. Once you claim for a windscreen replacement, your cover is completely exhausted. If you want protection for the remainder of the policy year, you must reinstate the coverage by paying a new windscreen premium. The claim is independent and none of them affect your NCD.
Your insurer pays up to your declared windscreen limit (RM800). You pay the remaining RM400 out-of-pocket. This is why it's important to set your windscreen sum insured at a realistic level when you take out or renew your policy.
For very small chips (under 10mm), many workshops can do a resin repair for RM80–RM150. Whether to claim or pay out-of-pocket depends on your excess amount and the hassle of the claim process. For full cracks or major damage, always claim.
No. Windscreen endorsements are only available with comprehensive motor insurance policies. If you are on Third-Party or Third-Party Fire & Theft insurance, you are not eligible for windscreen coverage under your own policy.
Many car owners are unaware of this, but most modern Electric Vehicles (EVs) now feature panoramic glass sunroofs. Because replacing a massive panoramic roof is highly expensive, it is absolutely vital to set your windscreen sum insured at a realistic level that includes the replacement cost of your sunroof.
